Resumo:This study aims at (1) discussing the role of Testing and Evaluation in the teaching/learning process of a foreign language; (2) identifying and analysing attitudes, perceptions and reactions of Brazilian primary and secondary school pupils and teachers, university Letters students and university English lecturers in relation to the issue; (3) identifying problems faced by the target groups; and (4) proposing a Teacher Training course in Testing and Evaluation for primary and secondary school teachers. The study is based on the findings of a survey involving 129 subjects from '1º and 2º grau' (primary and secondary) schools and two universities in two different cities in Brazil. Among the issues included in this investigation are: learners' involvement in evaluation, teachers and learners' self-evaluation and the use of test results to improve the teaching/ learning process.
