Abstract: The basic theme of that thesis is the business strategies in education, in selected Brazilian private schools, of elementary and secondary education, of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, that use the Internet effectively to support their curriculum. Throughout that study 13 schools have been appraised, using as accessory a process of technological benchmarking. Among the selected cases, it had been observed that each school was following its own guidelines to search for the best way of administering information technologies and apply them effectively to the school curriculum. As a result, many school administrators - in order to respond to the new market needs regarding computers - ended up acquiring equipments with inadequate configurations for teacher's use, without offering any previous training for the faculty. The structures of computer technology in the selected private schools of Rio Grande do Sul are specially focused on activities such as: maintenance, support and training. There are only a few exceptions of specific activities directed to search new technologies. Along the process of technological learning, schools had the opportunity to absorb the know-how, that is, to obtain sufficient knowledge to operate systems and equipments and introduce innovation enhancements. However, it did not result in the schools actually acquiring the know-why, meaning that, they were not able to generate radical innovations or to develop modern technologies. The results of that study show that, in fact, the schools has not been adopting pro-active technological strategies; they have been using defensive strategies instead, using products or services shortly after their competitors and positioning themselves as followers of technology holders. Although the actual reality presents difficulties for some institutions, the effort toward developing computer science, can bring the consolidation of the competitive advantage in the future. 1 2022-10-05T12:30:24Z 2022-10-05T12:30:24Z 2000.
