Disturbances in the balance between cell proliferation and loss underlie pathologic conditions of the stomach mucosa ranging from gstritis to cancer. Not much is known about factors influencing gastric mucosal cell proliferation. To investigate determinants of human gastric antrum and corpus mucosal cell proliferation in vivo, looking at: A) Infection by Helicobacter pylori (HP), modality (active; chronic) and intensity of gastritis in these sites; B) Anti-HP IgG titres and intensity of gastritis of the antrum and corpus; C) HP vacuolating toxin (VTOX) status, looking also for an association between VTOX, intensity of gastritis, and mucosal cell proliferation status; and D) Sodium intake, in HP-positive (+) and negative subjetcs. We evaluated the mucosal cell proliferative status by PCNA immunostaining of antral and corpus biopsies of 81 patients (41 m, 41 f, age 18-83 ys). Proliferation status was estimated by the PCNA labelling index (LI). Histology and HP culture of antrum and corpus were performed according to the Sidney System. Serology was performed by ELISA. The presence of VTOX was determinated in a cell vacuolation assay. Sodium (Na) intake was stimated by the Na/creatinine ratio in fresh urine samples. 1) HP was detected in 50 individuals. A correlation (C), significant, was found between presence of HP and antrum PCNA LI (Mann-Whitney, p=0,0073). A weak association between intensity of inflammation and PCNA LI was found for active and chronic gastritis (CG) of the antrum and for CG of the corpus (Spearman's r=0,37, 0,46, 0,28, respectively); 2) A C was found between serotitres and active and CG in the antrum, and CG in the corpus (r=0,59, 0,64, 0,58, respect). A C was also found between serotitres and antrum PCNA LI (r=0,42; in HP (+) patients, r=0,46). 3) A weak C was detected between VTOX and corpus PCNA LI (p=0,02); 4) Sodium intake correlated, but not strongly with#$&antrum PCNA LI (r=0,31). Conclusion: 1) HP infection, presence of gastric mucosal inflammation, serology, presence of HP VTOX activity and Na intake correlate individually, but not strogly, with antrum and corpus mucosal cell proliferative status in humans; 2) Antrum and corpus proliferation status are influenced by different determinants. 1 2022-10-05T11:57:07Z 2022-10-05T11:57:07Z 1994.
