| Resumo: | Resumo : Este trabalho tem por objetivo geral investigar a mudança de significado e, consequentemente, de função, ocorrida com o verbo ir, que, além de ser um verbo indicador de movimento espacial, passou a ser usado também, em contextos mais abstratos, como marcador de tempo futuro. Propomo-nos analisar o processo de gramaticalização de ir, descrevendo e interpretando os diversos estágios percorridos nesse processo de mudança. Buscamos na Linguística Funcional Contemporânea, de inspiração em Givón, o suporte teórico para explicar a ocorrência do fenómeno em estudo. Segundo essa linha de pesquisa, o sistema linguístico deve ser descrito e explicado em contextos reais de uso. Dentre os postulados básicos da Linguística Funcional, selecionamos os conceitos de gramaticalização, metaforização e iconicidade. Os dados em que se baseia nossa análise foram extraídos do Corpus Discurso & Gramática - a língua falada e escrita na cidade do Natal, do qual coletamos as ocorrências de ir, produzidas por estudantes do ensino fundamental (8a série) e do ensino superior, nas modalidades falada e escrita. A partir do resultado de nossa análise, propomo-nos sugerir atitudes a serem adotadas em sala de aula, considerando que o processo de evolução da língua é de grande relevância para o ensino do idioma materno.#$&Abstract : This paper aims to investigate the change of meaning and function of the verb ir (to go). In addition to being a verb that indicates spatial movement, it is aiso used in more abstract contexts as a future marker. We intend to analyse its process of grammaticalization through a description and interpretation of the severa! stages occurred in that shift. The theoretic basis we use to explain this phenomenon is the Contemporary Functional Linguistics, inspired by Givón. According to that line of research, the linguistic system must be described and explained in real contexts of language use. Among the main postulates of Functional Linguistic, we selected the concepts of grammaticalization, metaphorization and iconicity. The data that support our analysis are from the Corpus Discurso & Gramática -a língua falada e escrita na cidade do Natal -, from which we colected the uses of ir. Those are spoken and written texts which were produced by students from highschool and university. Based on the results of our analysis, we suggest some altitudes to be adopted in classroom, considering that the concept of language change is very important to language teaching.
