The ionic charge of these dyes made the calculation of accessible surface uncertain. The solubility of CI Solvent Red 1 was substantially increased by addition of 200 g litre 1 urea and 10 g litre 1 Dyapol G, and adsorption isotherms for cotton and viscose plotted. In the case of CI Disperse Black 1, 100 g litre * phenol was used to increase solubility. The isotherms all showed evidence of monolayer formation and the 2 -1 corresponding accessible areas were calculated (29.93 and 43.45 m g 2 -1 for cotton and 57.56 and 49.20 m g for viscose rayon for CI Solvent Red 1 and CI Disperse Black 1 respectively). The experimental difficulties were considerable and reproducibility was not always satisfactory but the results provide more evidence that initial dye sorption on cellulosic fibres is related to accessible surface area. 1 2022-10-06T08:10:42Z 2022-10-06T08:10:42Z 1989.
