Abstract: The purpose of this work is to characterize the influence of ecological, behavioral and demographic factors on dispersion in Callithrix jacchus. Two groups were equipped with colored collars and observed during 4 years at EFLEX station (Brazil). The first group (BM) occupies an Atlantic secondary forest area, and the second one, (PL) an eucalyptus plantation and a contiguous orchard. Food availability and food consumption/were measured on both sites, as well as social and sexual behaviors using the focal sampling method (5 days each week, during 12 months). Births, disappearing, dispersion and deaths of individuals were recorded once each week. The diet of Callithrix jacchus consists in exudates produced all year long and fruit of seasonal productions. Foraging occurs over a defended territory, respectively 3.9 ha in BM group and 4.4 ha in PL group, from which neighbor groups are excluded. The group structure is multi-male and multi-female, with an affliliative center of reproducing adults, and two or three non-reproducing individuals. A single reproducing couple were observed in BM group, whereas one male and two reproducing females were present in PL group. The mean interval between successive birth was 5.8 months, with two births occurring during the year. During this study, 14 individuals disappeared, and 19 other migrated (16 emigration and 3 immigration). Migrating individuals were from 12 to 38 months old, and most of them were females (62.5%). Inbreeding avoidance and intra-sexual competition may influence female migration, whatever the period of the year or the tertiary sex-ratio of the group. Males disperse for similar reasons, but also when adult males are more abundant than adult females. When reproducing individuals move, two related males maintain the territory and the social structure within a group with an immigrating female. 1 2022-10-06T07:25:19Z 2022-10-06T07:25:19Z 1996.
