Abstract:The purpose of the present research is to verify the influence of the socioeconomic level on the school performance of first class students from Public Schools in Natal in the topics Communication and Expression, Social Integration and Introduction to Sciences, in 1977. The sample was constituted by 899 students, who for the first time in 1977, attended the first class of the first grade in Public Schools of Natal. The instrument for collecting the data was a questionary with informations about the student, the socioeconomic situation of his (her) father or tutor, and about the teacher. The analysis of the collected data was made through frequency distributions and Chi-square tests (x2). The results indicate a lower performance in Communication and Expression, when compared to that in Social Integration and In i troduction to Sciences, by students from all socioeconomic levels. However, students belonging to the lower socioeconomic level presented a lower performance in Communication and Expression, Social Integration and Introduction to Sciences, when compared to those of the middle and high levels. #$&Abstract: The variables students' age, access to pre-school education, and presence at the classes seem to be influenced by the socioeconomic level and are related to the school performance of the student. Among the variables related to the teacher, age and number of years of teaching had the most important influence on the learning results of the students. The data suggest the need for investigations in other population, and for the search of solutions to the problem of the poor performance, especially in Communication and Expression, of students coming from a low socioeconomic level. Proposals were made to amplify the age interval in which school is obligatory, to expand the pre-school education, to pro mote a higher valorization of the first class teacher, and to in troduce more dynamic curriculum at the teacher's schools, to enable a better work of the teachers with their first class pupils. 1 2022-10-06T06:38:28Z 2022-10-06T06:38:28Z 1979.
